No commentsGPS - One of the most significant 20th century inventions
The Global Positioning System or most commonly known as GPS is probably one of the most significant inventions in the 20th Century. Since being open to be used by the public it has made available many advantages for scientific research, navigation, geologic surveys and commercial uses for common good.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System. It utilizes at least 24 Medium Earth Orbit satellites that transmit microwave signals, the system enables a GPS receiver to determine its location, speed, direction, and time. It is initially planned to be used solely by the US Military but after the shooting down of Korean Air Line Flight 0007, Ronald Reagan ordered I be available for civilian use.
How does this system works?
GPS satellites circle the earth twice a day in a very precise orbit and transmit signal information to earth. GPS receivers take this information and use triangulation to calculate the user’s exact location.
