Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
Dedicated in turning science into commercial products for society’s use and benefit through support and encouragement of research, development and education, Hebrew University is now one of the pioneers in drug delivery.
The novel drug delivery solutions are made possible through the results of the different Technology Transfer Services areas and fields of the Technology Transfer University. World-renowned researchers with the use of world-class facilities as well as the close cooperation with Israel’s leading pharmaceutical companies and hospitals contributed to the realizations of the capability of the University to reach the said achievement.
As a matter of fact, Hebrew University possess some of the world’s acknowledged experts in the number of fields that made the university a research center for revolutionary drug delivery systems. Some of the experts are Professor Abraham Domb who is known to be an expert in degradable polymers, nanoparticles and biomaterials; Professor Ellka Touitou who lead the research in delivery of peptides and other drugs through biological membranes; Professor Simon Benita, a microparticulate and nanoparticulate targetable drug delivery system specialists. The named experts are all from the University’s school of pharmacy.
Aside from them, experts and specialists from the Casali Institute of Applied Chemistry, Department of Organic Chemistry and the Institute of Biochemistry, Food science and Nutrition of the Faculty of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Quality Sciences also contributed to the University’s top-caliber researchers. With the combined forces of the said experts, there is no doubt that over the past years, Hebrew University is recognized as the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.
Also, the Hebrew University has attained successes in the drug delivery solutions. Doxorubicin HCI liposome injection Drug Delivery Successes or more popularly known as DOXIL was developed by Professor Yechezkel Barenholz of the Faculty of Medicine. This is Alza’s lead product for oncology today.
In addition, Professor Barenholz also co-founded NasVax Ltd. together with Professor Eli Kedar of the Hadassah Medical School developed intranasal delivery systems based on platform technology. Plus Novalagi Ltd. was founded to extend solutions for ophthalmology.
The discovery of several drug solutions are not only what the university has contributed but they have also numerous new technologies. Among these technologies are the delivery carrier and new combination of FDA-approved drugs for intranasal drug delivery, a continuous release delivery system for antioxidants, highly adhesive patches made from a tree um exudates for transdermal and topical drug delivery and the simple, flexible encapsulation method for loading liposomes with biologically active materials.
The above mentioned successes are some of the break through in the medical field that the University has contributed. It is expected that after more years of continued extensive researches and studies, a lot of new technologies and innovations in the field will be discovered. Undeniably, Hebrew University made it’s own name as the leader of the drug delivery solutions.
